Movie Review- Saving General Yang
**WARNING: LONGGG POST**
M.B.'s bday party yesterday was ehhhh....
feelings were like a rollercoaster today ughhh...
anyways, finally watched Saving General Yang (宗烈楊家將) today.
it's a move taking place in the Song dynasty. and its based on true characters and the novels and stories. idkk...its like historical fiction i guess.
there's several versions of theatrical posters, the ones in this post is a mix&match of different batches. i chose the ones i like best(:
|
more modernized |
the movie assumes that you know ur history or at least a bit of background info about the Yang family b/c it's not gonna take time to introduce and explain some specific characters.
the whole movie is basically fighting...
but it was a great movie demonstrating filial piety and brohood.
|
in their costumes and props |
reflection here, below. and plot (kinda long) below the cast list:
it was absolutely
heartbreaking to see to see the Yang family members die. and the scene where 6th son brings back his dad's body and other soldiers and the mom and the princess is just kneeling down with tears.
|
strongest scene for me- when presenting their family photo and then
it shows everyone disappearing cept for mom and 6th son |
i think the
strongest scene for me was the very ending scene though. There was a flashback of the sons and dad and mom in the living room laughing and chatting. then it presents a family photo with dad and mom sitting in middle. and sons on either side of them. then everyone else disappears except for the mom and the 6th son. that scene, when the other family members disappeared...idkk it was just soo strong to me.
|
my boys in everyday suits! |
the scene where 4th and 5th son dies was also heartbreaking. they were hurt and b4 they fell into the water there's a flashback scene to where the 2 were little and they were playing and about to jump off a little cliff and into the water for fun. then it flashes back and as they were falling into the water they look at each other and they have a little little smile on the face, like, this is just like childhood. except now, we're
dying together. it seriously breaks my heart thinking about it. :'(
|
Daddy Yang- Adam Cheng |
characters didn't have much lines, so they mostly acted with their expressions, emotions, eyes, and their actions during fighting. came off pretty strong though.
i think the biggest flaw is that there was no room for
character development. if i could put myself in the dying sons' shoes while they were dying, it would've been more emotional. like idkk just a more expanded plot regarding each son. would've made the deaths stronger & probably would've made me cry.
nonetheless, the actors still did a wonderful job!
Fav. character is 3rd son (Vic Chou). first of all, i loved his weaponery (bow&arrow) and he looked absolutely gorgeous shooting arrows. his eyes though..are like OMFG. his eyes are give off such a strong feeling, and u can't really tell in the film, but in the posters or screenshots of if u just pause the movie while watching, u can really see those eyes. (ahhhh!~)
|
3rd son-Vic Chou |
Actors wise,
Raymond Lam is my biggest bias, with Wu Chun, Vic Chou, and Ekin Cheng close behind, in no specific order.
Great movie demonstrating
filial piety and the relationship between bros. not to mention the wonderful cast of hot guys!!
|
6th son-Wu Chun |
Cast(not all characters are shown here):
- Daddy Yang- Adam Cheng 鄭少秋
- 1st bro- Ekin Cheng 鄭伊健
- 2nd bro- Yu Bo
- 3rd bro- Vic Chou 周渝民
- 4th bro- Li Chen
- 5th bro- Raymond Lam 林峯
- 6th bro- Wu Chun 吳尊
- 7th bro- Fu Xin Bo
Plot:
*parts in brackets not explained in movie thoroughly*
[Daddy Yang with his Yang family is very strong in terms of fighting, war tactics etc. so the emperor likes him a lot, which leads to this other guy, Pan Ren Mei (daddy Pan) to be really jealous. Daddy Yang's 6th son is in love with the princess and so is Pan Ren Mei's son, Pan Bao. Pan family holds a fighting contest and whoever wins will get to marry princess. Daddy Yang doesn't want the 2 family to be big enemies so he tells his 6th son not to go. the 7th son, however, is pissed and feels that his 6th bro should be able to fight for his girl so he sneaks out to fight for his bro. Pan Bao tries to cheat with a weapon, but in the end 7th son accidentally kills him anyways.]
|
1st son-Ekin Cheng |
Now Daddy Pan is pissed off and plans for
revenge. Coincidentally, the Liao people is attacking the borders of the Song and while discussing plans with the emperor, Daddy Pan recommends Daddy Yang's 6th and 7th son to take the lead for their army against the Liao. Daddy Yang, knowing that Pan only said that cuz 6th and 7th son doesn't have prior experience to war, so he volunteers himself to take the lead instead.
|
Vic (3rd son)'s weapon is the bow&arrow |
Daddy Yang leaves with Pan and the other soldiers; with Yang ahead and Pan behind serving as backup. Even though they were pretty stable condition while fighting, Pan suddenly orders to retreat on purpose. Yang's army that's on the battlefield can not retreat. Daddy Yang receives an arrow with poison to his back but still manages to
escape with some of his army members to Two Wolf Mountain (兩狼山), with the Liao army surrounding them.
|
5th son- Raymond Lam |
Back at home, the Yang family gets news of what happened to their dad and all 7 sons decides to go and find, save, and bring back their dad. before they leave, mommy Yang goes to this fortune teller guy and he states that "When fate is irresistible, 7 kids will go and 6 kids back." (當知天命難違,七子去六子回)
|
whoever drew this...dangggg boy/girl |
Knowing that she will lose a kid, she still lets them all go, but tells 1st son of their fortune and 1st sons says that he will bring all his bros and his dad home safely. (even if it means risking his life to do so)
what they dont know is that fortune teller actually meant "7 kids will go, and only the 6th son will come back" (in chinese its worded the same)
|
6th son- Wu Chun |
then fight fight fight and everyone dies except for 6th son. he brings back his dad's dead body in the end.
there's a LOT more details than just fight fight fight but i set up the intro, rest if u wanna watch it, gotta go watch it urself.
