Experience
Writing this the day after (Sunday), but will publish as if this has just happened (Saturday).
Last time writing was first week of working, and now writing again, I've already ended. Unfortunately last day is closing and had to stay until 10:50, sigh.
Overall, it was a good experience. But am I gonna miss working there? No. The co-workers are all really nice and friendly though. The work itself I'm not gonna miss. With that being said, I did learn a lottttt, and I'm very grateful for that.
I've always been really bad at communicating with strangers, but working here forced me to greet and help out everyone. I remember when I first started, how awkward I felt talking to customers and asking if they were finding everything ok. By the end, there were none of that awkwardness, it comes naturally now. Answering phone calls at work was probably one of the worst. One, because you absolutely don't know what they're gonna be asking for, and two, it's sometimes difficult to hear/understand them. Overall though, ~2 months worth of talking to strangers has made me feel much more comfortable in the outside world.
In the past, I'd feel a bit anxious going to ring up my stuff at other stores, or asking people questions. But I realized that that's slowly leaving me and I feel more confident about myself. That's seriously the best thing I've gotten out of this job.
In terms of actually working there, some zones are definitely better than others. In the beginning, I was usually assigned to the floor where I greet customers + organize shoes, or to the clearance section where I mostly organized + greet customers (less greeting, I would say). That got boring after a while. So, after I was cashier trained, I got excited everytime I was assigned to the cashier. Time pass by so much faster as a cashier, and you get much more interaction with customers than on the floor. Once in a while though, you'd get these confusing af transactions. Those made me ajsdilfjdf, cuz I'd always be doubting myself and scared that I'd do something wrong.
At school, a mistake is reflected in your grades, and that just affects you. But here, a mistake affects your customer(s). And when it involves money, oh man...
Some of those really confusing transactions actually make me not wanna be up at the cashier at times. I remember thinking that I'd rather be on the floor and greeting customers and organizing shoes, cuz then you wouldn't really have to think until someone asks you a question. Overall though, I still like being up at the cashier. It's more challenging, more interactions, and time passes by wayyyy faster.
In terms of interesting things. I did mention one from my first week, but something even more interesting happened just a couple days ago. Too lazy to type out the whole story, but basically this middle-aged man (w/ white hair), came wearing a spandex. He first came last week, and that already caught my attention because he stayed late. Second time he came, he was normal at first, left, but then came back a couple hours later. He had changed from normal clothes to his spandex like last time. Also stayed up until closing and manager told me to greet him and basically tell him that we've closed. Long story short, his spandex was completely see through and I saw his fucking balls =.=
But all is well, because I didn't give him a reaction, and just pretended I didn't see it and continued to tell him that we've closed. Later, when walking out, CL also saw his balls...anyways not cool. very disturbing. According to manager that day, he's been in several days earlier this week. Day after that, other [more experienced] manager said that if he comes in again, she'll confront him, and that if he does something weird, she'd be calling the police. He did not show up again for the remainder of my days there, so that never got to happen. TBH, kinda interested to see the police show up lmao.
Now, onto a discussion of co-workers. (Around 5-7 new employees were hired after me.) As mentioned earlier, everyone's really nice. One of the most surprising was that one of them has been there for 10 years :O
Besides MH, the most memorable associates, excluding managers, were S and C. C's a year older, and i just loved her personality and how cheerful she always is really stood out to me. She was realllly nice to everyone. Apparently, she also went to NHS. S's a year younger, started after me, and she was also really nice. Really pretty too, and I loved how she always greeted me (and prob others lol) cheerfully. Like, oh Miranda is here! Made me happy xD I also remember when we were both on break and were complaining about others lol oops..
Another one, K., my first impression of her was that she's not as cheerful and friendly. But then one time, she was up at cashier, and I was backing up. Then, after I was done with my customer, I noticed that she was having difficulties talking to her customer (a Chinese family). She was trying to get them to sign up for rewards but the language barrier was very strong, so I stepped in and took care of it. She thanked me multiple times after that lol. That was a good moment, it actually feels very nice when you help someone.
MH left not long after I started, but she honestly told me a lot. She's like my second manager. Honestly more helpful than the manager that hired me at times (because that manager is new too, only been there since June). MH not only taught me how to wipe mirrors without getting backaches (lmao), but also told me about checking my schedule and payroll stuff online. Bless.
As for the other person that I also knew prior to working, it was nice having her there, cuz it's like someone you know better. But also, towards the end, I got the vibe that she was bossing me around a lot. Not gonna go into that though.
Now, the managers. The one that hired me is nice, but because she was new I got annoyed at times of why they put her in charge of new employees. Like, shouldn't someone more experienced be in charge of that?
Jy. was even newer, so she new even less. That also made me annoyed at times for the same reason mentioned above. However, the best part about her is her casual talk about random stuff like people's outfits and shoes. It makes it easier to get to know her better, and makes it easy to talk to her.
Je. was one of the more experienced ones, and she's nice, but strict.
V. is my favorite. She's the most chill, and talks about interesting stuff, like hot guys, over the walkie.
She's also the one that gave me a hug on my last day. Like awhhhh. Def my fav MOD.
The worst aspects of working here include unpredictable work times, late hours for closing that extend way beyond 10pm, subject to the discretion of the MOD at the time. Also, I did not enjoy performing janitorial duties like cleaning the bathrooms, wiping mirrors, vacuuming, taking out trash. But, I mean it's part of it...
Now, for the thing(s) I've bought while working there. Bough a pair for LZ, and a pair for RN with my discount. Bought myself a pair of Steve Madden's oxfords that were on clearance (not valid for employee discount), but there were 80% off, so I just couldn't not buy it, even though it actually didn't fit me so well...oops...hoping it'll be better after wearing it a couple times. Then, bought 2 waterproof protection thing yesterday with the employee discount and a $10 reward (thanks mostly to RN and LZ for racking up my points lol).
I guess that's about it. Also wanted to mention how LL came to surprise visit me at work lol.
Lastly, thankful for dad for driving me back and forth when he doesn't have work.
So yeah, that's it. Won't be missing it too much, but I'm extremely grateful for this experience because I really learned so much. This day actually came so fast. I still felt new when working there, and I still remember my first days like it wasn't too long ago.
Now that this day has come, it means school is literally right around the corner...sigh
