2014 Follies Review
Saturday, Feb. 1st I went to
Follies with SL, SN, and JS. Arrived at 6:30pm, and JS was already there, waiting outside. So I saw her and we walked together inside. Holding the doors open were a few performers (4-6), including Jin C! anyways, they were singing "Feliz Navidad".
So we went in and there weren't really anyone lining up. So we kinda sat a round table. But then, after like 3 minutes, people started lining up so we did too. We were about 13th or 15th in line which was actually really good. Cuz not even 5 minutes in, and the line got pretty long. SN arrived the latest.
Anyways, so we just talked until 7:00, when the doors finally opened. The halls into the theatre was decorated
(Harry Potter themed), and since we were 1 of the first 50 people, we got a Harry Potter wand, which was actually, just a painted chopstick.
Also got a ballot for voting, and a program type thing.
I will go into the details for each performance, sooo stop if you're not interested.
Jin- Drum Solo. Ever since sitting next to him in web publishing, and how the class would know that he's really into band and drums and stuff, i've been really wanting to hear him play. Finally got the chance to hear him play solo on Saturday. The drumstick tricks were cool, and so was the glow in the dark costume, drum, and drumksticks. At the end of everyone's performance, where all the performers came out, he gave his glow in the dark drumsticks away to a girl in the front row. I was not happy.
Toast (band). Ohhh geez. they came out and i was feeling okay at first, but then they started singing and the instruments started going and i wanted to marry them. The lead singer, Jordan Sanberg sang "
Let Her Go" by the Passengers. Seeing guys dressed up in
nice black suits and rocking out on guitars, drums, piano, whatever just kills me. really. at that moment, i really wanted to
marry them. ohh geez..singing wise was okay too, there's def. other performers with better voice, but they weren't bad or anything. Good 伴奏 too for the rest of the crew.
Mikayla(singer). Tommy, her bf is on the ballot list too, but apparently he didn't play the violin while she sang. She did have a guitar accompaniment though. Her voice was beautiful. Really. beautiful.
Anne&Isabella (tap dance) pretty cool, and its a change from the singing and instruments. Tap Dancing in general amuses me [to a certain degree].
Elise-Sang and played piano at the same time. First of all, woww, that's actually not even easy at all. And her voice was pretty good. There's singing parts she could still improve on, but otherwise, wow. very good.
Jamie -(speed paint). this one was cool.
Glow in the Dark paint and you really didn't know what she was drawing. Until like 3 minutes later when she's done. and the lights turn on and she flips the canvas over and you see that she has magically drawn the
Seattle Skyline. Cool.
Shawna- solo singer, and guitar at the same time. Song choice was cliche, (Perfect Two), didn't appeal to me. I've had some
personal issues with her back in middle school, but that's not talk about that. Her performance was pretty good actually. Def. takes courage and skills to play and sing at the same time. Voice was pretty okay, except that at the majority of the high notes, i felt like she was really
straining her voice and it was unpleasing to the ear to hear that. Maybe more practice. still pretty okay/good performance though.
Kevin&Hee Soo- Both sang, and Kevin also played the piano too. Hee Soo just sang. This was my
favorite performance, talent and skills wise. Not gonna lie. Their voice are sooooooo beautiful. They are soo pro. like oh my effing god. they can sing wayyyy better than some of the very trashy singers in the american music industry. they sang the song
"She's Gone (Lady)" by the Steelheart. Which is an old song that i've never heard of until that day. It was soo good i decided to google it. It's originally a rock song that i wouldn't have liked, but the way they interpreted it and changed the style to a soothing, peaceful, full of emotion song really
WOWWW KILLED IT. not kidding. Both voices were absolutely amazing by itself, and when together, complimented each other's in a very nice fashion. Well suited voices. Outstanding Job.
Derek (comedy), sorry man. didn't really understand it. I'd assume that if i get the humor, it'd be quite hilarious. Okay, but facial expression wise, was reallyy good. A bit too much pacing though. But still, good voice, good expressions.
Katelynne&Mikayla. Both sang, and Mikayla was also on the guitar. Mikayla is absolutely stunning. She's so perfect and pretty and her voice is really pretty too. Both their voices were good by itself, but when combined ehh wasn't that good. Didn't really mix and blend it together unlike Kevin and Hee Soo's where they added on to the performance. Theirs kinda dragged the performance down a little. Still, both had good indiv. voices too.
Griffindor and the Stank Beetles- (band). so after so many like kinda peaceful, mostly singing performances, this was a loudd
heavy rock metal performance that made the atmosphere rise, i'll say. Got the crowd pumped up. yeahh, thats how i'll put it. Personally, not a fan of this genre of music but it was good though.
Intermission~~~~~~
Suited(band). This one was good. Lots of band people, and lots of instruments. All the guys were dressed up nice too. nothing much else to say.
Lower Your Expectations-(singers). whooo another
hot guy band like the 2nd performance (toast). well...my eyes were really only on 1 guy the whole time. Truth it, i didn't really pay attention, cuz i paid too much attention on 1 of the members and his every action. he's sooo perfect <3333 okay, so basically they were singing a few incomplete songs, stranded together by humor.
Austin (piano)- solo piano performance. good skills, sounded hardcore. and he played the whole thing standing up. like no chair/bench. which is actually pretty hard, cuz the position just isn't right. but yeah, good.
Jett&Emily (singer&guitar)-jett played guitar and also sang while emily just sang. emily has an absolutely gorgeous voice. i can see some improvement on high notes, but like 95% is beautiful voice. jett's voice is...well let's just say he def. hasn't hit puberty yet. He's in the stage when Bieber first debuted. Wonder what Jett's voice will sound like after puberty. His voice isn't bad though. When mixed together, their voices were EHHHH...it was okay..of course, not as compatible as Hee Soo and Kevin's.
Anabel (tap dance)- another tap dance! But solo this time. Woww, takes lots of courage to go up there alone. And also her performance was so much longer than the first one. I felt tired for her. But she kept a smiling face the whole time. Good job, and great effort.
Jaya (singer, ukelele). Needless to say, her voice is beautiful. We've (most people) have heard her sing before for national anthems during assemblies or whatever. It's just beautiful. No need to explain more.
Anonymous (band)- Composed of string instruments and piano, and vocals. Adrienne Chen played the piano and sang at the same time. Rest were just 伴奏. Great voice,
pleasing to the ear, and great accompaniment.
Cory(freestyle soccer)- cool performance, and something new from previous performances. it was like 2-3 minutes worth of
cool tricks with soccer. Never got bored or anything the whole time. And they weren't tricks that you've seen like 100 times before. It was actually really cool. He's so tall like oh my...ohh and hes my neighbor. He walks really fast. okay.
Derrick&Steven (violins)- Whole time was instruments. Heard that they were the good ones in orchestra, and finally i have a chance to hear them play. finally. It was good. I actually don't know too much about string instruments (although i played the violin in 5th grade), but there were parts where im just like ohh that actually sounds and looks cool. yeah.
Miki (dance)- what a pretty dancer, pretty dance, and pretty costume. It was good, and this was the only dance performance, so that was good. To see something new.
Copenhagen Interpretation (Band)- Ending band! Most had already performed before like Jin, Tommy, Mikayla, etc. Also had some new faces too, like Brie, Deno, etc.. Lead singers were Mikayla and Daniela, both with
beautiful voice. Great ending performance(:
The MCs, Isaiah and Casey were great too, and the
Laff Machine of course! Funny and entertaining~
I ended up
not voting cuz I didn't have a pencil/pen, the voting area was extremely crowded, and I can't choose. The announcements did announce the top 3 on monday, but couldn't really hear it. whatever. they were all really good.
I think if I really had to choose I'd choose
Kevin and Hee Soo as number 1. That's all I know. Can't choose any other performance.
I regret not going to last year's Follies, but I have promised myself that I will attend all future ones (:
Looking forward to the DVDs to come out!
